Enter a name above, here at NLM's site, to recall those reported deceased, missing, or found. These reports were mainly gathered in the month after the January 12th earthquake, through ICRC, CNN, and Google.

Commemorate

“A lot of people came to help Haiti and it was extraordinary. But Haitians also helped themselves. I mean this amazing story of people digging…. Many of my own relatives were dug out of the rubble with hammers, by other people in the neighborhood. Haitians have been extraordinarily resilient and I want people to know that.”
- Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat, speaking Nov. 1, 2010

Today, we pause to reflect on the tragedy that struck Haiti a year ago and claimed the lives of more than 230,000 people. In the wake of the devastation, countless more were left injured and 1.5 million displaced. Last year's disaster and the on-going struggle have been remembered in statements by, among others:

To help remember and learn from the last year, a "Haiti Update Webinar; Cholera and Other Public Health Issues for Responders" was presented Jan 12th, cosponsored by the AMA, NLM, and others, and viewable here (after Jan. 14th). For more on this topic, visit NLM's "Health Resources for Haiti, Post-Earthquake", through "Additional Resources" at top right. Also, NLM has a weekly posting for disaster information disseminators (subscribe or see back issues here). Regarding Haiti, it covers one-year-later reports from medical/humanitarian organizations, and announcements of upcoming events.

Additional commemorative events will be held globally, with Orlando, Florida and Boston, Massachusetts among the US locations. A Facebook page has been set up.
